The red eft is a showy little amphibian that lives in a wide swath of the eastern United States and Canada. This woodcut portrays the lifecycle of this creature which includes eggs, gilled larvae, terrestrial efts, and adults that live in the water.
I was excited to add slipper orchids to the background plus so many mushrooms! Red efts sometimes live around mushrooms because decaying mushrooms attract insects and efts are carnivores. Plus, the image of efts among the gills of mushrooms is such a good one. Every time I see these beauties in nature I squeal. The color is magnificent and they are so cute!
