A few tips if you love fireflies, larvae live in moist/wet areas for a couple months up to 2 years. So leave some wet spots in your yard if you also love seeing these flashing beauties. Fireflies are beetles. They are susceptible to pesticides, so don't spray for pests, unless you also want to loose your fireflies.
Light pollution is a problem because the insects have a harder time when it is too bright at night. We all know moths who are attracted to light at night, but it also affects fireflies ability to communicate with each other. This piece is called "Big Dipper" because that is one common name of a firefly that lives in the Northeast (where my home is.) Males fly in a "J" shape resembling the constellation. If you look at the top of this piece you can see the constellation in the background.
