Male octopi have a modified arm that is used solely for carrying sperm. Some species actually detach their "arm" during mating, and the female stores it choosing what male and when she wants to fertilize her eggs. It's unfortunate that these 8 legged amazing creatures have such short life spans. Both male and female die shortly after mating. Many think cephalopods would take over the world if they had longer lifespans.
One of my all time fave authors is Mary Roach, she wrote the book "Boink" so this piece pays a slight homage to her fantastic sense of humor. I recommend anything she has ever published.
