The latin name for Narwhal is Monodon monoceros which means "one tooth, one horn." Even though some of these tusky whales actually have 2 horns! Narwhals live in the Arctic and depend on dense sea ice for survival. Orcas are the Narwhals biggest predator, but, they cannot forge easily into the thick frozen seas. And, if the northwest passage becomes a viable trade route, ships will be trekking into the seas where these shy mammals live. Also, Narwhals largest food source is halibut. They live about 4,000 feet below the surface, if the fish move, the Narwhals will have to find a different dinner. Scientists don't know the impact of warming temperatures, but, these whales could be the first effected due to their icy quarters.

I used reference images of Niaqornat, Greenland for the cute little houses that are featured at the top of this woodcut. Niaqornat has a population of 60 people and about 3x as many dogs which is why there are no humans in this woodcut :) Apparently nobody has plumming or running water, but they do have the internet. Please check out this great link from the Smithsonian I used for reference information while making this woodcut. And Thank-you Kristin Laidre for your help in getting my facts right!
