Monarchs are a flagship butterfly in North America. Who can imagine a time when they may not flutter about? Monarch larvae feed almost exclusively on milkweed. As we all know, our world is getting more and more crowded which means less room for milkweed and in turn less room for Monarchs. Deforestation of their winter roosting sites has created hardship. They roost along the sunny coast of California and a mountanous region of Mexico. Their Califoronia roosts are ideal for them but also for humans who crave sunny skies and rolling ocean front real estate. Their favored trees in Mexico are also favored by loggers, making both areas particularly vulnerable.
